Evaluation Q.4

Audiences theories- Barthes code theory is a way of understanding what the audience want from a text and how they can be involved and engaged in the narrative. The semantic code relates to the mies-en-scene of the product and how the props, costume and setting create meaning. The use of a house setting automatically appeals to the audience as it is directly relatable and the use of props such as creaky doors, an old letterbox, mirrors and stairs make it clear that the narrative us revolving around the character behind the character and they will want to know more. The hermeneutic code refers to the unknown parts and mystery of the narrative which lead the audience to guess and want to know more about what is going on, we made this a key aspect in our opening sequence as there are constant flashes to the main protagonist saying 'save yourself' making the audience wonder why the dialogue is being reinforced.

Vladimir Propp analysed 100 fairytales and came up with a theory that there were seven types of character types in all narratives these include: the villain, the donor, the helper, the princess, the false hero, the dispatcher and the hero. The target audience will be looking for characters that conform to the stereotypes of a horror film, therefore inline with this theory and to appeal to the audience we have included a villain played by myself who is shown to be the 'dead girl' in the narrative.Secondly, there is a 'Princess' type character who is the main antagonist 'Sally' who is trying to escape the horrors in her house. The target audience will be more inclined to watch the film to the end if it has these two types of characters as they are key in typical horror genre films.
