Flashbacks- Research

In our opening sequence we will include flashbacks to help the audience understand th narrative and why in particular the main character has become subject to the horror that occurs when she becomes victim to the spirit who has come back from the dead. The main character will have a flashback to the dead girl playing in the living room of the house she is now living in. The dead girl will be decorating the Christmas tree in the front room. Christmas music will be playing in the background and a distorted version of this music will be playing loudly from the basement when the character comes round from the flashback.

A flashback is a scene in a film or a novel that is set in a time earlier than the main story, a frame moving rapidly back through a combustible vapour. Flashbacks are effective as they recount events that aren't fully explained or understood from the main narrative
This example of a flashback transition is useful as it shows that the characters movement and facial expressions are essential in signalling that they are thinking and having a flashback. In this example the character looks up and to the left as if the memories are coming back to her and she is in deep thought. Secondly, an edit is added in-between the events that are supposedly happening there and then and the events which happened previously to make it clear to the audience, similarly a black and white filter is added over the footage of the flashback to further reiterate that the character is remembering past events.
